Boundaries and Rooms in Your Garden

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Robin De Groot Creating structural elements in your garden will transform it from the ordinary, to the extraordinary. A well-planned framework of supports and dividers will create visual interest throughout the year, as well as allow your plants greater depth and perspective by incorporating the walls, fences, arbors, trellis and forms, into their growth pattern. Boundaries and divisions also create the stage setting for each area in your garden, while keeping the rest of the world (and its problems) out. The feeling of going through a rose covered arbor with a boxwood hedge, into a wide expanse of lawn with a central feature, is inspiring. The sight of a stonewall with climbers in bloom, cascading over its surface with the light dappling through its leaves, allowing just a glimpse of the plantings behind it, overwhelms the viewer with joy. Everyone can easily create this feeling and look in their garden, by incorporating structure and by understanding the method of dividing your property. Firstly, you need to analyze your gardens: Foreground The area closest to your home and the most visible. This is often your entertaining feature and utility area. Very small gardens usually have only a foreground, and thus require considerable planning. Midground This is the middle area of your property where you can show off with large perennial beds and special features. This is also the best area for lawn, larger ponds and garden structures. Background This is the furthest area from your home and is generally best suited for larger trees, greenhouses, vegetable gardens, wild life cultivation (birding), composting and larger perimeter fencing and hedges. The garden divisions you would use in the first zones (foreground and midground) should be lower in height and semi transparent in nature (picket fences, wattle, low hedges, stone walls, trellis and varying ground levels). In both very small gardens and large gardens, view your outer most perimeters as an opportunity to create a sense of enclosure and privacy for your garden. External boundaries create privacy, shield you from noise and wind and allow you to create your own personal theme. Internal boundaries are used to inspire and entice both yourself and your guests to lose oneself in the garden. These semi transparent or small-scale internal divisions are to create a psychological break between zones and usages. Methods of Division Lattice Indispensable! This is the only word that can encapsulate its many benefits and uses in your garden. From the French treillage, you can make it yourself, buy it off the shelf, or have it customized. Fencing created with lattice, gives an open, seductive quality to it, while allowing the passage of air and light, with a degree of privacy. Lattice can be mounted on your external boundaries to create both visual depth and foliage support. Anything that cannot be moved from your garden (garage, shed, and block wall) can be easily covered with lattice. In a formal setting, lattice (treillage) can be arched with tapering lines to give a classical perspective, while providing winter interest. In small gardens, lattice provides a horizontal growing space for foliage and hanging containers. Natural Stone Walls Walls built of flagstone, slate or rubble, provide a sense of permanence and comfort. Natural stone internal boundaries create a visual strength and power to your design while being both functional and ornamental. You can construct internal walls yourself, however, anything over 36 will require professional advice. Plant moss in the cracks and train your plants to cascade over them to create a sense of antiquity. Fencing The spectrum of choices includes: country style picket fences; woven twig mesh fences; lattice fencing; panel fences; split rails and imposing palisades. Whatever your choice, remember to first examine your space and determine which style will best suit your design, internally and externally. For example, if you are creating a Japanese garden, then your external walls will be tall, of natural materials and will provide complete privacy from the outside world. Internal divisions may be created to direct your eye on featured elements, while also providing a sense of intimacy to secluded areas in your garden. When choosing the materials for your fencing, think about their size, alignment, pattern, colour, configuration and style. Cast Iron Popular since the early 19th century, this style is best suited for formal gardens, particularly for their external boundaries. Iron can be left in its natural state, or can be painted. Arbors This type of garden divider is essentially an area for seating, with a canopy structure above. Arbors, in all their forms (pergola, arch, etc.), create a sense of romance and mystery. An arbor will create an internal division in your garden, while also providing support for climbing plants, focusing your view and directing traffic flow. The contrast of the shaded retreat within and the sunlit garden surrounding it, gives a greater sense of depth to your design. These structures (arbors, pergolas, archways, etc.) frame the garden view beyond them, while providing an enjoyable means of emerging from your foreground, to your mid ground. Hedges A natural method of creating boundaries, while providing yearlong visual interest. Hedges, like fences, will filter the wind, afford privacy and depending upon your plant selection, bloom throughout the summer. In a formal garden, hedges are usually clipped into geometric forms; thus, you need to select a plant with a dense growth pattern. Boxwood (Boxus Sempervirens) is perfect for parterre gardens and topiary forms. Yew, white cedar, privet and juniper are also all well suited for training and heavy clipping, allowing you to create any form your design requires. In an informal garden, a softer, unclipped hedge is best suited. While they will take more space, you can achieve a cascade of blossoms with this design. Dwarf lilac, Potentila, Roses and Bride Wreath (Spirea X Vanhouttei) are just a few examples. Prune your informal hedge only when your plants are becoming too large. By incorporating some or all of these elements within your garden you will transform it from merely having summer interest, into a garden that is equally beautiful throughout every season of the year. Tension Headaches at Work - Take Stretch Breaks and Head Them Off at the Pass

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Paul Bacho Chronic tension headaches are often the price you pay for success if you’re one of today’s busy executives and office workers. Deadline pressures and the drive to increase productivity often compel you to ignore the warning signs that a tension headache is on the way. But it doesn’t have to happen - all you have to do is take a break! The trick is recognizing the warning signals that a tension headache is imminent. Perhaps the best indicator is when the back of your neck starts to tighten up. Whenever you feel the back of your neck - or shoulders or upper back - begin to get stiff as a result of computer, office or phone work, you must take a break and do a simple three-minute behind-the-back stretch. You can do it sitting or standing. To do it seated, your must have a chair with backing that comes halfway up the back. Your arms must be hooked over the back of your chair and your shoulder blades pulled together. If you’re standing, you should assume the military position: head up, shoulders back and stomach tight. As you do this, you must make sure your chest is stuck out. It is also important to keep your head up, too. Your shoulder blades should be pulled together until you feel a steady tension in your shoulder joints. You shouldn’t go overboard on this; there should be no pain. Now hold this stretch for three full minutes. At the end of this stretch, you should feel your back muscles loosen a bit. You may also feel a sensation of warmth up the back of your neck, which is a sign that blood flow has increased. If you work all day in an office setting, you should take breaks throughout the day to perform this stretch - it will prevent tension headaches! Paul Bacho is a certified athletic trainer in Cleveland, Ohio with over 28 years experiencetreating patients with chronic pain. He’s also co-author of “How to Get Permanent Relief From Chronic Tension Headaches,” a holistic program that he’s used to help people from all over the world get rid of their tension headaches. Career Opportunities: Telemetry Technician

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Keith Londrie Peter Parker aka Spiderman, once said, “With great power comes great responsibility”. While we don’t have Parker’s rsum, he may have temporarily worked as a telemetry technician before opting for a relatively relaxed profession of freelance photography. To understand the responsibilities of a telemetry technician, one needs to understand telemetry first. Telemetry or “remote measurement” is a highly automated communications process by which measurements are made and other data collected at remote, inaccessible or dangerous places, such as orbiting satellites, and then relayed to receiving stations on ground for display, monitoring, and recording. The telemetry technician has many different job responsibilites. The telemetry technician has a wide variety of career opportunities which may include monitoring of large, complex systems such as chemical plants, oilrigs, satellites, electric power plants, gathering meteorological data, remote meter reading, logistics management, tracking endangered land and marine species, real time physiological monitoring of patients, and monitoring manned and unmanned space flights. If you are a telemetry technician charged with the maintenance of a telemetry service of any type, it is suggested that before your accept the contract, you or the owner of the equipment take possession of a service manual for that particular system. Essential information required for any effective servicing work includes the following: - Assigned carrier frequency for the system - Type of modulation, bandwidth (deviation), and maximum data rate - Level and frequency of all pilot tones and sub-carriers - Significance of each frequency in the modulation bandwidth - Expected signals at input and output test points for each sub-section - Sense of logic, baud rate of data and error correction scheme If the source of the data is a remote station, which forms an integral unit with the radio equipment, you will also need information on the type and location of the sensor supplying the original information and details of any preliminary data processing that may be done before the input to the radio link. The telemetry technician in command of this great technology should monitor it conscientiously. For instance, for many environmental monitoring duties, such as stream gauging or automatic weather stations, the measurement values are unlikely to change significantly for many hours at a time. In such cases, it would be grossly uneconomical in terms of both electrical power and use of spectrum space to run the telemetry transmitter continuously. This is why telemetry transmitters are not often run continuously. Keith Londrie II is a well known author. Treating Rust on Metal Railings

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Rodger Busse Rust on metal railings is caused by a number of conditions. Most common is wear and tear on the paint protecting the metal from rusting. As paint ages and dries out, it cracks, letting moisture attack the metal to start the rusting process. Scratches and nicks in the paint will create the same situation. Metal rusts anytime it is not protected from moisture. When railings are constructed, the metal components are ground or brushed to remove rust, welded together and then painted. If there is a delay in the final painting, the bare metal may begin to rust. The rust is not visible and is hidden in the pores of the metal. The metal is then painted. After the railing is installed, it may start showing rust through the paint, eventually forcing off chips of paint. This could happen within a few months of being installed. To stop the rust and restore the railing to a new rust free condition, the rust must be stopped or completely removed. In the past, this required removing the rust and paint, then priming and repainting the surface. This is a very time consuming and expensive process because of the many hours required to grind off the rust and paint. Thankfully, there are now non-toxic, latex-based products that allow you to stop the rust without the time and expense of grinding off rust and paint. These can be painted over the rusty surface to neutralize the rust and prime the entire surface. A good topcoat of paint will restore the railing to a new condition and give long-term protection against rust. The easiest way to apply these products is to use a paint mitt (available in paint stores) to spread them over the metal. This is much faster than using a paintbrush. When finished treating the surface, wash the mitt with soap and water to clean it for reuse. The surface will be dry in 20 to 30 minutes. After 24 hours you can top coat with any kind of paint. As long as the topcoat is maintained and not allowed to crack and breakdown, you will not have to deal with rust on your railing again! Rodger Busse owns The Rust Doctor. This one-step non-toxic solution allows you to convet and paint over rusty metal in one easy step. Visit The Rust Doctor at http://www.therustdoctor.com It can be used on cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, farm equipment, and household items. Save My Marriage Advice - Do You Know the Word Compromise?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Susan Wise When a couple is having problems, sometimes they want a save my marriage advice miracle. The problem with that is most marriages in trouble need more than a quick fix. Just like sustaining an injury, that band aid (quick fix) will fall off and you have to then redress the wound until it heals. Save my marriage advice works in much the same way. You have to continually work at it and redress those old issues until they are resolved or forgiveness is granted. Save my marriage advice starts with a single word compromise. Without it, you cannot progress any further and you might as well call a divorce lawyer. The reason why as much as fifty percent of all new marriages end up in divorce is that they do not have the tools to communicate and when they cannot communicate, there is no compromise. Save my marriage advice, whether it is from a trusted family friend, priest or marriage counselor, cannot be successful until those open lines of communication and compromise has been established. So how can you open those lines of communication when they have been closed? Save my marriage advice for this dilemma includes several ideas to combat that obstacle. One edict on save my marriage advice says for you to create some time just for the two of you. This can be an official date or times after the kids go to bed. In order for this to happen, you cannot just say that you will set the time up. Ink it on your calendar. Make it one of those top priorities that only sickness or catastrophe can break. By making your marriage a priority and sticking to your date, any save my marriage advice you decide to follow will have a better chance of success. Listen. If you follow any save my marriage advice, you will listen to your spouse and look them in the eye as they talk to you. Do not interrupt. Wait until your spouse has conveyed everything before interjecting in with your comments. If you want to clarify something, parrot back some of what they said to solidify it in your mind. When it comes to save my marriage advice, a big portion of the problems stems from not feeling that you can confide in your partner in marriage. It will take some time, but the next step in the save my marriage advice is to introduce physical intimacy. For many couples who have marriage problems, that casual intimacy in brushing bodies against each other or sitting next to one another on the sofa is lost. Re-establishing physical ties (beyond sex) is an important piece of save my marriage advice. Hugs and kisses link you physically as well as emotionally. And that my friend creates closeness in marriage. The three things listed above are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to save my marriage advice. As you start practicing, you will likely discover other aspects that you can integrate. The bottom line is that save my marriage advice takes two willing partners and compromise. If one of you is not willing to work at it, the marriage cannot be saved. What You Should Know About Dating Body Language

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Peter Portero A smile is usually friendly and inviting, and a knee-slapping belly laugh usually means your date is having fun. But there are other, more subtle types of body language. Knowing how to read them can help you figure out if your date is really having a good time. Classic flirtatious moves include touching, smiling, and leaning in close to the other person. We all want to be closer to the things we desire, so moving our bodies forward or casually resting our hand on someone’s arm denotes attraction and interest. If your date does any type of unconscious grooming, like running fingers through their hair or adjusting their clothing, chances are they’re trying to make sure they look as attractive as possible for you. If she comes back from the restroom with a fresh coat of lipstick, or he comes back wearing fresh cologne, it’s very likely your date wants to get to know you better. Signs of trouble include crossed arms, turning the body away, and eyes that look everywhere but at you. These are classic signs of someone who is uncomfortable and/or wants to be somewhere else. Be careful however, because some people wont look at you because they are nervous. The next time you want to let your date know you’re interested, remember to smile, casually touch their arm, lean in close, and give your appearance a little attention. If your date is paying attention, they’ll get the idea! The Two Most Desired Traits In A Mate - This Will Blow Your Pants Off (Pt. 2)

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Christine Akiteng In Pt. 1 of this article I broke down the trait of kindness for you. The second most desired trait is intelligence. This is where it gets really, really interesting. When it comes to choosing mates for long term relationships we are smarter than we even know. We chose mates based on 8 types of intelligence, not just the one or two IQ tests measure. Here are those 8 types of intelligence: 1. Interpersonal Intelligence (People Smarts): the ability to understand other peoples intentions, motivations and desires. We are attracted to people smarts people because they relate well, have many friends and are cooperative. They are also sensitive to our feelings, fears, moods, temperament, motivations and intentions. They are genuinely empathic, and genuinely concerned about what is happening to us moment by moment. 2. Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smarts): the capacity to use language to express what’s on your mind. Human courtship is largely through the use of words and people who are good at thinking in words and using language to express and appreciate lifes beauty and complexes are very attractive because they excite, please, convince and stimulate us by the way they use words to convey information. 3. Musical Intelligence (Rhythm Smarts): the capacity to think and communicate using rhythm. This is what I like to call the Elvis Presley Phenomenon. Men and women with this trait have the unusual ability to make the rest of us feel what they feel, become one with them, and together with them. Their song becomes my/our song because we feel connected to them in a deeper and more primal way. We even want to take on their identity - amazing! And to think I always wanted to be Michael Jackson - before the plastic surgery! 4. Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence (Body Smarts): the capacity to use your whole body as intelligent communicator of ideas, emotions, desires etc. Were attracted to people with this trait because body smart people are body expressive, they have good timing, coordination and reflexes, they like physical contact and are very responsive, they have exceptional control of their bodies and as a result excellent in using their bodies in the bedroom - or where ever you prefer to do it.. 5. Mathematical Intelligence (Logic Smarts): the capacity to understand the relationship between cause and effect and manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations. We attracted to people with this intelligence because of their ability to think and reason deductively and inductively. They are usually organized good planners and most of us enjoy some level of certainty. They are also good at handling and managing money and financial investments. 6. Naturalist Intelligence (Jungle Smarts): sensitivity, respect and understanding of the delicate balance and deep relationship between the nature within and the nature outside (other creatures and features of the natural world). Although we’ve come along from the jungle days our Psychological brains are still programmed to be attracted to people who can effectively deal with their surroundings. People who are savvy about their environment make us feel safe and happy” because we know we can always count on them to introduce us to the mysteries and wonders (nice restaurant, discount store, important people and connections etc) and protect us from physical harm. 7. Intrapersonal Intelligence (Self Smarts): having an understanding of yourself; knowing who you are, what you can do, what you want to do, how you react to things, which things to avoid, and which things to gravitate toward. We are drawn to people who have a good understanding of themselves because they tend to know what they can and can’t do, and to know where to go if they need help. They can be relied on to take care of us when we can’t take care of ourselves. 8. Existential Intelligence ( Life Smarts ): the ability to be sensitive to, and have the capacity to pose and ponder larger questions such as the meaning of life, why are we born, why are some people evil, why do we die, what is consciousness, or how did we get here etc. We are attracted to people with this intelligence because they are fully aware and appreciative of the world we live in - its diversity, complexity, and wonder. And if we are open to it, they take us to places that our fearful minds are usually afraid to go. Come to think about it. It seems to me that were not that very different from our ancestors because survival selection still shapes how we chose a mate and who we find attractive. If youve been focusing your energies elsewhere like in pick-up lines, tricks and techniques, you are riding in the wrong banana boat. Why not just focus on developing the traits of kindness and intelligence and let survival selection take its course? My interest is in - how we can take advantage of this knowledge so that when a man or woman comes looking we will be chosen as the desired mate. How can we best position ourselves so that his or her survival instinct radar zooms on us- Zap! You are the one I want! I have a few ideas on my website on how this is possible. This is a quest, one which I intend on taking all the way back to discovering every little secret our ancestors used to attract more mates and higher quality mates. Ill share with you what I find out. Auspicious Wedding Feng Shui

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Kathryn Weber Selecting Wedding Colors for Good Luck As soon as a bride announces that shes engaged, friends ask, What are your colors? While many women choose colors based on nostalgia or what will look good on their bridesmaids, color choice really should be taken more seriously. When a bride plans her wedding, she pays close attention to the meaning of each detail except color. And since everyone has such strong reactions to color, doesnt it make sense to choose colors that are harmonious and beneficial for the couple so that their special day will be a happy one? Colors shouldn’t be a clash of elements When it comes to selecting colors for a wedding, it is important to consider the colors that are being paired. Many times, colors are chosen that are opposing according to feng shui. For instance, blue and yellow are often combined. This is a class between earth and water elements. Pairing opposing colors creates opposition from the start. Harmonizing colors makes a wedding go smoothly Think about pairing colors based on their harmony together. A good example of this is the bride a groom. Interestingly, the most harmonious and beneficial pairing of wedding colors comes from the tai chi symbol of yin and yang. That color pairing is the colors of black and white. Black is yin (female) and white is yang (male). This is why, when a man wears a black tux, his male energy is harmonized with the female color, and when the bride wears white, her female energy is balanced with male energy. Feng shui is often referred to as a technique for creating harmony. Harmony in feng shui means that colors, elements, shapes, and numbers are all supportive and beneficial for one another. Its often used in homes and offices, but the technique can also be used for weddings. Pick colors with auspicious meanings and that promote happiness When it comes to matrimonial happiness, the bride and groom might want to take a cue from the Chinese. To the Chinese, red and gold together create success and harmony. These two colors together are especially auspicious for making families get along well, too. And keeping relations friendly is very something important when two families come together, often for the first time. Weddings are happy occasions, but they can often (unfortunately) be punctuated by heightened emotions, ill feelings, and sometimes, anger. Diffuse the situation (especially if you know there are some ill feelings in the family) by creating a color palette that is harmonious and will draw positive attention toward the happy couple — rather than amplify any negative feelings. Better still, select color choices that will benefit the bride and groom and put them on the road to marital happiness.
